Childhood Revisited: An Evening of Storytelling
At the Abronson Center on the Portland campus of USM

Thursday May 8 at 7pm
Join us for an evening of storytelling for adults (and children who can listen as adults) as Deborah Freedman tells her version of JM Barrie's beloved Peter Pan and Michael Parent (who grew up in the Franco American community of Lewiston) tells A Beautiful Game, the mostly true story of his lifelong connection to the game of ice hockey.

Storyteller Lorna Stengel will host this collaboration, as fairy tale and childhood memory illuminate each other.  Peter Pan wants to enjoy the adventure of childhood forever, and a man in his 60-s is still lacing up his skates and hitting the ice, is "I won't grow old" just a variation on "I won't grow up"?

Michael Parent, storyteller, actor, and writer, grew up near the textile mills in Lewiston. Since 1977, he has performed in the U.S., Europe, and beyond. He has received the National Storytelling Network's Circle of Excellence Award. He still plays in the GPOHL (Greater Portland Oldtimers Hockey League) and the OFC (Old Farts Classic) Tournament.

Knowledge or appreciation of hockey definitely not required.

". . . this funny and dramatic show is fascinating even for those who know nothing about the game. The arc of the story takes Michael from an awkward childhood, struggling to learn to skate, to his community's big moment, when the St. Dom's team on which he was goalie competed, against heavy odds, at the Boston Garden, for the New England Championship. Some listeners will love this story for its portrayal of hockey, some for its poignant insights into father-son relationships, some for its loving image of the Franco-American community. Its life lessons far transcend sports."

Corner House Inn

Storytelling Gala

On Thursday, May 29th, the Corner House Inn in Center Sandwich will mark the conclusion of their 20th season of Storytelling Dinners with a Storytelling Gala. Six different storytellers will be spinning yarns after dinner. Appearing on the program will be NH storytellers Andy Davis, Rusty Locke, Angela Klingler, Brian Hastings and Ed Fayle, and storyteller Jean Armstrong  of Portland ME.

Chipmunk farmer and storyteller Andy Davis has entertained audiences as far east as Paris, as far south as Bamako, and as far west as San Diego. He lives with his family in the shadow of Mt. Chocorua, where they direct the World Fellowship Center in Albany, NH.

Rusty Locke, local curmudgeon and spinner of tales, occasionally accompanies himself on 12 string guitar or 5 string banjo. He has been telling and singing tall tales for well over 30 years. He says, “My grandfather was a rascal from Quebec, and a teller of whoppers. I just carried that tradition along.”

A nationally recognized storyteller, Angela Klingler is a southern girl by birth, relocating from San Antonio to Salem, NH. She has been bridging time, culture, and community with world folktales, fables, fairytales, myths and legends since 1989.

Irish storyteller and balladeer Brian Hastings is a second generation Irishman who weaves traditional (and not so traditional) Irish tales around soothing Irish ballads and folksongs.

Ed Fayle has been recognized as a favorite storyteller in Mt. Washington Valley for over a decade. Each December, dressed in pajamas and a purple  bathrobe, Ed reads stories as the narrator of The Polar Express holiday train ride in the North Conway area.  Ed writes many of his own stories. Playing folk guitar and blues harmonica, Ed layers original music around these stories.

Maine storyteller Jean Armstrong has performed at US and Canadian Festivals and the National Storytelling Network Conference in Pittsburgh. She has just been selected to perform another full length show at the 2008 National Storytelling Conference in Tennessee. Jean is known for her imaginative and expressive delivery, and her stories have been praised by renowned storyteller Brother Blue as “exquisite – a rare thing!....a masterpiece!”

Don’t miss this entertaining smorgasbord of tales! The Storytelling Dinner begins at 6:30 PM, and the cost is only $16.95 per person, plus tax and gratuity. Gala evenings are always popular, and advance reservations are highly recommended!

For more information about this program and other storytelling evenings contact the Corner House in Center Sandwich at 284-6219, or online at info@cornerhouseinn.com.
